Preventing A Life Without Computers

Last week my computer system crashed. Since I don’t have a backup system to use, I’m kinda dead in the water. This isn’t good, especially when you make a living with a computer.

My main form of interaction has been the iPhone. While I can accomplish many basic compting tasks, it’s not a replacement. Using the Family PC is only good for so much.

Here are some thoughts:

1. Have a contingency plan if your main system goes off line. Having a backup system is as imporant as a backup of your data.
2. Perform regular maintenance. Computers are machines and need to be periodically serviced.
3. Upgrade regularly. Replacing old hardware with new hardware can reduce potential failure. This action won’t eliminate problems, but most hardware components are only rated to work for a certain amount of time. Not indefinate.
4. Keep an older machine on standby with the latest updates and software you would need should you have to bring it online. You don’t want to spend hours or days installing software. You could even hire someone to keep it updated if you don’t have the time.

Life without computers isn’t the worst thing that could happen, but if it’s what puts food on your table, make sure you’re covered. I’ve learned a very costly lesson.
